While my focus goes on leave

First, I demand (ok, request) that you play this song while listening to this post.

Second, it's been two years since James Rigney (aka Robert Jordan) passed away. Two years to the day. Of course, I didn't find out until by birthday, four days from now, and that made for some shocking birthday news. There is a very nice remembrance over at The Thirteenth Depository.

On a happier note, I saw Nick Hornby on Sunday. He happens to be one of my favourite authors (as my answers in my BBAW interview will prove). And... wait.. there's an interruption coming... I'm sorry. I'm going to finish talking about Nick Hornby, but Robert Jordan was one of my favourite authors of all time!

See what I did there? Yeah, please don't judge me.

Anyway, it was great to listen to Mr Hornby talk about his writing process, writing in general, and music. People mention his football (soccer) obsession, but I rarely hear people talk about his musical tastes. There is some very good music referenced in About a Boy (the book, not the movie), and in High Fidelity (the book, not the movie). And since tonight is a night of tangents, how about I just tell you that sometimes the movies get it right. For example: The Velvet Underground. Or Dry the Rain, by The Beta Band.

Then again, maybe it's a personal thing. Maybe it's like why I can relate to the store guys in the following clip, and why others might not.

Oh well. I'm too exhausted. My next post will be more linear, straightforward, and sensical.

I remember trying to check Dragonmount to see if Robert Jordan had posted another update but the site had crashed ... I found out later that day that he had died, and all the hits to his blog had knocked out their server.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next book, even though I know it won't be the same with him.

I am so going to read High Fidelity. After viewing the clip, I realized, my dh has viewed this movie. Not I, as of yet. Yep...so up my hubby's movie viewing taste. What did you think of the movie as compared to the book?

Okay...I just noticed that Nick Hornby wrote About a Boy. I loved the movie. Seriously did...well, I like alot of which Hugh Grant is in. Anyways, did you read the book? Did you watch the movie? If so, what do you think of them both?

Usually, I do not like the movies if I have read the book.

Heather, I know what you mean. It's been 4 years since the last book. Chapter 1 is online at www.tor.com, and it's a little odd because it's Jordan's work, but Sanderson's words. I'm a fan of BS, so I don't mind. I don't know how others will react.

Deanna, the movie is just as good as the book. Not too much changed, other than the location and music references. About A Boy is also one of my faves (and the movie marked the beginning of my non-sexual crush on Hugh Grant). The movie also has to change references (early 90s to early 00s), and it changes things here and there, but it's still good.

I like to watch movies first and then read the book. It feels like a teaser and then the book opens the story up even more. When I do it the other way around, I tend to compare it unfavorably.

I usually watch a movie after reading the book so I am usually disappointed. There is one instance (that I can recall) where I have watched the movie before truly reading the books and that is with Harry Potter. In this instance, I will agree with you. The movie did work as a teaser which led to my reading of the books (the first book really bombed for me - with my first read). The books then did open up the story.
I like experiments so maybe I should conduct one. Should I watch High Fidelity before I read the book? OR Should I try and read the book About a Boy? I am curious if my movie watching experience will better this way. *shrug*

Hmmm... High Fidelity is pretty similar in both forms. About A Boy takes more liberties. So do you want a more faithful adaptation or not?
